and...we are back online!

Most of you already know that I had a very meaningful Memorial Day Weekend, and have started a new blog 'KoDauk Moments'. This reminded me that I wanted to get back to my personal blog; perhaps as a mean to preserving some type of privacy or independence. Not sure how these two blogs will blossom in the future, but let's wait and see!

South Korea's Blackened Beaches

It absolutely breaks my heart to see these pictures...
http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2007/12/10/world/1210-SKOREA_index.html

I can almost feel the suffocation...sea creatures, not knowing what hit'em, dying a slow and painful death...

Our earth does not need any more "help" to deteriorate!
...
Please, remember to turn off your lights; turn the faucet off when brushing teeth, or soaping up in shower; walk/bike as much as you can...RECYCLE!!!
...
Just a little effort would go a long way if we all participate!

Quotes - Celebration of Discipline

Just had to share the following -

"The greatest problems of our time are not technological, for these we handle fairly well. They are not even political or economic, because the difficulties in these areas, glaring as they may be, are largely derivative. The greatest problems are moral and spiritual, and unless we can make some progress in these realms, we may not even survive. This is how advanced cultures have declined in the past." - D. Elton Trueblood

"Superficiality is the curse of our age. The doctrine of instant satisfaction is a primary spiritual problem. The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people." - Richard J. Foster

Dating in present day...

Haven't written in a while. GKS (at one time known as 'onesip') asked about this blog, and thought I should keep it updated. :)

So, dating again. I took the plunge and dove right into online dating scene! May I tell you, it totally isn't easy. First of all, I can't believe I'm out in the "scene" again. Secondly, I totally feel like Diane Lane's character from the movie 'Must love dogs'. Those of you who's seen it, I feel like her when she's with her two sisters picking out an outfit for her date - which turns out to be her father!

On the other hand, this girl that used to be in my Sunday school got married recently. She writes "like they say...they save the best for last...I've always thought of you as Ms. Perfect since I was little, so whoever you meet will be perfect; and you two will be just perfect couple"...I got a good laugh, appreciated her encouragement, and thought, I can't believe that she's a grown woman! I've known her since she only reached my knees in height!!!

Hope everyone's well in your corners of this world and know that even though we lack in communication, you are all in my prayers! BTW, everyone should get a Facebook page...

?5-min of fame?

It's been a while...too tired to update, but here's a link to a website where I volunteer as 'volunteer scientist'.
I'm "featured" this summer, and the featured question was also answered by me!

It's actually all together a little embarrassing...but...wth, why not?
It's well known now, the secret is out - I am a nerd.

Pearly whites

I picked up Hailie from the vet last night. He came back with pearly whites! I'm quite taken with his teeth. I can't stop staring at them...I also can't get over how much it cost to get them cleaned (plus all the other added costs)!!! Let's just say it's equivalent to a month and a half of my rent, or, my budget for variable expense for FOUR months! Needless to say, it'll be tough for a while. They gave him another bandanna. I think we (Hailie and I) like this one better. It goes better with his coat. :)

On another note, every time he has to spend the night at the vet, he comes back completely defeated with the tail between his legs. He's lethargic. He won't eat. He craves constant attention. I wonder what went through his mind all night, if he knew I'll come and get him soon, or, if he thought he's been abandoned...

He's now on some painkillers and antibiotics for a few days. Usually, he's able to pick them out from his food and I've used peanut butter to trick him into eating them. Well, he caught on. He wouldn't even touch the peanut butter. I actually had to mix the food and the pills in 'Galbi (ribs)' marinade and feed him w/ a spoon. Spoiled kid!

Where does the time go?

...well, time just flies by...
older I get, faster it seems to travel.
Here's a brief recap of 2007 thus far:

January -
Started volunteering as a Youth Leader at FPCE. I've noticed a few differences "working" for Korean-American church vs. American church. (If it sounds like a gross generalization, I apologize in advance...) First and foremost, American churches seem to put less pressure on you. It's almost like they truly respect the term "volunteer". In the beginning, I almost felt like they didn't "like" me since they really didn't ask me to do anything. After a few weeks, I realized they were leaving the initiation up to me. My previous experience in Korean churches were that the church told you exactly what to do, what was expected, and the obligation to meet their expectation was very clear. At FPCE, however, the church wanted me to determine what I wanted to do and give. This is also the first time in my spiritual journey where I felt that God wanted me to seek Him first. He wanted to know how much I'm willing to give, instead of Him letting me know what He wanted. It's been difficult, but a very rewarding learning process to be more proactive than reactive - as I always have been when it came to serving Him...

February -
Had a couple of visitors from the past. Hyosin came to visit Chicago. I hadn't seen her in 3 years or so! It was such a nice treat to see her. It was freezing cold but we managed to walk around the windy city the entire weekend! Most of our pictures were out of focus since our hands were too cold to hold the camera steady. :)

E also came into town and we got to enjoy a quiet moment with cookies-and-tea (a significant sign that we
are all getting older; neither of us were up for a noisy bar despite our love of good beer). Great news = E and K are engaged! They are planning a September wedding in NYC. Best wishes to the beautiful couple!!!

^^side note: Feb was freaking cold and snowy...even the lake was frozen! EB and I braved the cold and ventured out to the lake to take some pictures. Here's my favorite one (the skyline you see faintly at the right corner is Chicago downtown). On that note, EB and I have successfully managed to keep up our gym routine all last year! We averaged twice a week - okay, we didn't quite make the three times a week deal, but still, I say that's job d@mn well done!

March (first half) -

I'm home to get a new passport. I've been coming into the U of T lab for a few days now, will be here for another week. It's been nice to catch up with the people here and to see Dr. R on a daily basis.

At the home front, Hailie still wins over my heart with his big eyes, mom [as much as I love and respect her] still hasn't lost her ability to stress me out to the max...I think mother-daughter relationships are one of the most complicated ones in our lives...bro is still being himself, dad's in Korea but should be here sometime next week. (I miss my dad dearly. I haven't seen him since last winter...although we speak a couple of time a week, it's not the same!)

^^sidenote: Hailie went to see the vet and the vet tech gave him this bandana for St. Patrick's day. I've never given him an accessory, so this was very interesting for me to see him "styling". He did well, he didn't try to take it off, he just left it alone. It eventually fell off while we were walking...don't know when or where it fell off...he doesn't seem to miss it either.

I saw my family physician for general check-up and I have to say, I have the best doctor in the world. I've known Dr. K for 15 years now. He knows my entire family, he knows my family history, and in a weird way, he "knows" me. Even without me saying much, he somehow "gets" me and gives me some great life advices - this time, they were about facing the future [finishing school, finally having to get a real job, and marriage]. I can't share them with you though (Doctor-patient confidentiality). I can tell you that he prescribed a 'vacation'...only if my insurance covered that! He also prescribed to be selfish and to say "f@#k it". It'll take too long to explain that one...if interested in knowing why, you'd need to call me.

On a downside, the woman who's been doing my hair for past 12 years retired!!! I'm so upset about this...and if you've had a good stylist, you know how I'm feeling. Good thing I got to see Dr. K...now who am I suppose to turn to for much needed therapy? ;)
